Express and Telegraph , Friday 22 January 1897, page 3
A strange adventure befel one of the Port Adelaide harbor pilots a few days ago in connection with the steamer Argus. When the vessel was swinging in the river with the aid of a staysail the pilot in charge gave orders for
the sail to be taken in. The mate, looking towards the man at the jib halyards, said "Let go!" and simultaneously the men at the halyards who, were addressed and the man at the anchor, who thought the message was for him, "let go," and both the anchor and the sail came down. Unfortunately immediately underneath the anchor was the harbor pilot's boat, and the heavy mass of metal fell into this with a crash, carrying both it and the men in it beneath the water. The mistake was at once rectified, and as the anchor was hauled up it brought the boat and the pilot with it. It was fortunate that the results were not fatal, but the pilot had an experience which gave him a shaking and which put him into the doctor's hands. |
