The fellowship of seamen 1914

In view of the war the following translated extract from a recent issue of the "Hamburger Beitage" is more than usually interesting, especially as the Janus is now in Australian waters. It refers to the death of Captain Hoppe, formerly of the German-Australian Line, who was well known in Melbourne. The paragraph reads as follows:

" A noteworthy example of the friendly feeling existing between English and German seafaring men was recently affordered at Tellicherry, India, upon the death Captain Hoppe of the German-Australian liner Elmshorn. Captain Hoppe was taken ill suddenly and died. To show respect for the memory of the deceased mariner Captain McDonald and five Officers of the British-India liner Janus, which lay in the adjacent port of Cannanore, attended the funeral. Being a Lieutenant of the Royal Naval Reserve, the deceased Captain was accorded military honors. In German shipping circles such an expression of sympathy will be greatly appreciated."
